SPIRITS SUPER TAX

Distilling the Spirits Super Tax.

While the Australian spirits industry continues to invest heavily in product and marketing innovation, and in the many Australians who serve, sell and market our products on 1 February we were hit again by the six monthly CPI increase to one of the highest alcohol tax rates in the world.

Despite this, in recent years Australian spirits have built a premium reputation, with Australian-made spirits taking out prestigious awards around the world. Never Never Distilling Co’s Southern Strength Gin has just been named the World’s Best Classic Gin at the World Gin Awards in London while in 2018 Sullivans Cove took out the coveted “World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt” at the World Whiskies awards.

There are now more than 170 local distilleries in Australia and these businesses are passionate about what they do and committed to their local communities. Aswell as creating world class spirits they are investing in much needed tourism and hospitality infrastructure, creating jobs and supporting the broader tourism offer desperately needed in regional areas. And they do this while carrying the burden of the most punitive spirits tax in the developed world. Their bottles of spirits are lovingly produced, they win awards worldwide, and behind each and every one of their bottles there is a human story.

Our leaders need to share Australians’ pride in our distilleries and back the industry in its home market by freezing the spirits super tax.
